Behind the House: Meet Asma

Re:Coded House would not be what it is without an amazing team behind it. To celebrate the diverse faces bringing to life the events, workshops and programs there, we wanted to kick start an interview series with the people making the community and the House what it is. Without further ado, meet Asma - Re:Coded House’s amazing Community Assistant!

THE VITALS

Name: Asma Dogramaci

Age: 24

City: Erbil

Job Title: Community Assistant

Educational Background: Design and Engineering

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU DO

I’m the Community Assistant at Re:Coded House, my main priority is to ensure that all of our members have the best possible experience at our community. On a day to day basis, I greet incoming members to the house, do tours and help create events and workshops for our existing community.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT RE:CODED?

I used to work in another company in the same building of Re:Coded and every time the elevator stopped at their floor, I remember admiring the way the office looked! So one day I decided to send my CV for a remote volunteering role. A couple of weeks later, they reached out asking if I would consider applying for the Community Assistant position. It definitely wasn’t what I was expecting! Looking back, I really believe that it all happened for a reason and I was meant to join the Re:Coded family.

BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?

The best part of my job is getting to meet amazing young people all day long. We have a lot of people at Re:Coded House working on their own startups or learning new skills and that’s really inspiring for me.

HARDEST PART?

I think the hardest part is changing the mindset about the benefits of working in a co-working space. It’s a very new concept for Erbil (we’re the first co-working space) and a lot of people just don’t understand how much better it is compared to renting a private office. I hope that this will change over time as people come to understand the value of being part of such an amazing community.

WHY DO YOU THINK RE:CODED HOUSE IS IMPORTANT FOR THE CREATIVE AND TECH ECOSYSTEM IN IRAQ?

I believe Re:Coded House filled a huge gap in the community. Apart from being the first co-working space in the city, bringing together people for events and workshops, I believe it’s fundamental to have a space like this to ensure that the creative and tech ecosystem in Iraq and Kurdistan is able to progress. We need more tech startups who can collaborate with each other. Re:Coded House is just the place for that to be born!
